Ghost Hunting Equipment

By Joy J. Fine

Those who engage in ghost hunting usually have a large group that they work with. On average you can expect the team to consist of at least four people. They will use a variety of equipment to collect information often trying to prove or disprove what they are studying in a scientific manner. Many of these who engage in this activity are out to prove there are no such things as ghosts. Despite the fact that people have claimed to see ghosts for hundreds of years the scientific community will tell you that there is no conclusive proof that they exist.

The most basic type of ghost hunting equipment begins with cameras. A hunting team will bring with them both still and video equipment. Depending on where they are exploring they may also have infrared, digital and night vision equipment with them. Some will bring disposable cameras simply because they are easy to use. No matter which piece of photography equipment the ghost hunters choose to use they are all aiming for the same outcome. They want to get some type of visual on the ghost. Whether it is an orb of light that shows up or a shadowy apparition a photograph shows them more than any other piece of equipment. It is felt to be one of the best kinds of proof of the existence of a paranormal entity.

This equipment will be brought with if the hunters are trying to track down orbs or ghosts that have been seen. Electromagnetic field meters, also referred to as EMF, pick up the magnetic fields which often are tied into the appearance of ghosts.  One of the most common signs of a ghost being nearby is the sudden temperature change. Many people will experience this and so call for some assistance from a ghost hunting team to track down what the cold areas mean. To do this they can use several different pieces of equipment. There are thermal cameras or infrared temperature sensors. These instruments can sense the changes in temperature that create cold spots because often with these spots come ghostly activity.

The hunters have several other items they use to determine if there is ghostly activity. They will try to pick up various sounds, called EVP, electronic voice phenomena, which are believed to be the ghost’s attempts at contact.   There is another type of equipment that will search for sounds below twenty hertz.  This is done with infrasound monitor equipment and the belief is that it can pick up sounds related to ghostly activity.  The ghost hunting party will carry with them a Geiger counter to measure radiation levels, ultrasonic motion sensors to determine if there is non-human movement occurring in any given area. K2 meters may be brought with to use to talk to the entity or gas monitoring equipment to see if there are higher levels of carbon monoxide. This finding usually is considered to indicate a ghostly presence. Sometimes a somewhat less scientific device may be used. Dowsing rods are shaped like the letter L, made of brass and are believed to help determine if the ghosts are still there. A ghost hunting team must bring with them as much as is possible so that every test can be done and every story checked out as they look for the truth of ghostly hauntings.
